How to Pick a Random Winner From Instagram Comments (2026)
You ran a giveaway, the comments came in, and now someone has to win. Picking a name "by feel" invites arguments, and scrolling to a comment you like is not random. This guide compares three honest ways to pick a winner, shows how to set the entry rules, and explains how to leave a record that proves the draw was fair.
Quick answer
- For under 50 comments, you can number them and use a random number generator by hand.
- For a few hundred, export the comments to a spreadsheet and draw a random row.
- For rules, backups and a record, paste the post link into the Instagram Giveaway Picker.
Method 1: pick by hand (small giveaways)
Scroll through the comments, number each valid entry from 1 upwards, then ask a random number generator for a number in that range. It works, but it has three weak points. You have to count and skip duplicate commenters yourself, it is easy to lose your place on a long thread, and nobody else can check your numbering. Use it only when the giveaway is small and informal.
Method 2: export to a spreadsheet
A spreadsheet handles hundreds of entries without you counting anything.
- Export the comments of your post to a file with the Instagram Comment Exporter. Open the CSV or Excel file in Google Sheets or Excel.
- Remove repeat commenters if each person should have one entry. In Google Sheets use Data → Data cleanup → Remove duplicates on the username column. In Excel use Data → Remove Duplicates.
- Filter out your own account and anything that does not meet your rules, for example comments that do not tag a friend.
- In an empty cell, draw a random row with a formula such as
=INDEX(A2:A501, RANDBETWEEN(1, COUNTA(A2:A501))), changing the range to match your list.
One trap: RANDBETWEEN picks a new number every time the sheet recalculates, so the winner can change as soon as you edit anything. When you get a result you will use, copy the cell and paste it back with Paste special → Values only, or the name you announce may not be the name left in the file.
Method 3: use a giveaway picker
A picker does the filtering, de-duplication and drawing in one place, and can show how the winner was chosen. With the SaveIGReel giveaway picker it takes four steps:
- Copy the link of the giveaway post or reel and paste it in the picker.
- Wait while the public comments load. Up to 500 comments are loaded per run.
- Set your rules: number of winners and backups, how many friends must be tagged, a required word or hashtag, one entry per person, and any accounts to exclude. The page shows how many entries are eligible as you change them.
- Press Pick a winner, then copy the draw record to post with your announcement.
Set the entry rules before you post, not after
The fairest giveaways write the rules into the caption and then apply exactly those rules. A tidy set looks like this:
- How to enter: comment on this post and tag two friends.
- Who counts: one entry per person, however many times they comment.
- Who is excluded: our own team and partner accounts.
- When it ends: a date and time with a time zone.
- How winners are chosen: a random draw from valid comments, with a backup if the winner does not reply in 48 hours.
Changing a rule after people have entered, such as adding a follow requirement on the last day, is the quickest way to lose trust.
Make the draw verifiable
"We picked randomly" is a claim. A record is evidence. A good record states the time of the draw, the post, how many comments were loaded, how many were eligible, the rules applied, the winners and backups, and the seed used for the random shuffle. The giveaway picker produces this text for you. Because the shuffle is driven by the seed, someone who loads the same comments and enters the same rules and seed gets the same winners. Post the record in your Stories or the comments, and keep a copy.
What no comment picker can do
- Check follows or likes. That needs access to your account. If following is a condition, open the winner's profile and check before you announce them.
- See every comment on a very large post. Instagram shows logged-out visitors only part of a big post's comments. The picker tells you when it loaded fewer comments than the post reports, so you can say so in your rules.
- Include replies. Only top-level comments are entries.
- Spot fake accounts. Look at your winner's profile, for example with the Instagram Profile Viewer, and move to a backup if it looks like a bot.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Letting your own replies and your team's comments count as entries.
- Counting every comment, so a person who comments ten times has ten chances, without saying so.
- Redrawing until you get a winner you like. Draw once and publish the record.
- Announcing the winner before checking that they meet the conditions.
- Forgetting a backup winner, then having to redraw when someone does not reply.
Instagram's rules and the law
Instagram publishes promotion guidelines. For example, a promotion should make clear that it is not sponsored, endorsed or administered by Instagram. Prize draws are also regulated differently from country to country, with rules on things like registration, odds and who may take part. Read both before you launch. Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram have a built-in tool to pick a random comment?
The Instagram app does not include a random comment picker. You pick the winner yourself, in a spreadsheet, or with a separate giveaway picker that reads the public comments of your post.
Can I pick a winner from people who liked my post?
Not with any tool that does not log in as you. Instagram does not show the list of likes to logged-out visitors, so ask people to comment to enter and pick from the comments.
Can a tool check that people followed my account?
No. Checking follows needs access to your account, which a public-comments tool does not have. If following is a condition, check the winner's profile yourself before you announce them, and have a backup winner ready.
What if my post has thousands of comments?
Instagram shows a logged-out visitor only part of the comments on a large post. In our tests it stopped after roughly 2,000 comments on posts with more than 20,000. A picker can only draw from the comments it can see, so state in your rules how entries were collected, or keep the giveaway on a post with fewer comments.
How do I prove the draw was fair?
Publish the rules before the giveaway starts, draw once, and post the draw record: the time, the number of entries, the winners and the seed. Anyone with the same comments, rules and seed should be able to reproduce the result.
Want to save the comments as well? The Instagram Comment Exporter turns them into a CSV or Excel file you can keep with your giveaway records.
