Instagram Reel Download Not Working? 9 Fixes (2026)
You copied a Reel link, pasted it into a downloader, and nothing happened. Or the Download button simply isn't there. Almost every failed Reel download comes down to a short list of causes, and most of them take under a minute to fix. Work through the checks below in order.
Quick answer: why an Instagram Reel won't download
- The account is private, so the video cannot be accessed by any tool.
- The creator turned off downloads for their Reels.
- The link is incomplete, points to the wrong page, or the Reel was deleted.
- The download finished but saved somewhere you didn't look, such as the Files app on iPhone.
9 fixes, in the order to try them
- Check that the Reel is public. No downloader can save a Reel from a private account, because the video is only served to approved followers. Open the Reel in a private or logged-out browser window. If it will not play there, it is not public and cannot be downloaded.
- Look for the creator's download setting. Instagram lets creators switch off downloads for their own Reels, which is why the in-app Download option is sometimes missing. If a public Reel plays fine in a browser but offers no Download button, the creator has probably turned it off. A link-based tool only works with content that is publicly viewable, and you should respect a creator's choice when they have disabled saving.
- Copy the link again from the share menu. An incomplete or truncated URL is the most common reason a Reel fails to load. In the Instagram app, tap the paper-plane Share icon on the Reel, choose Copy link, and paste the whole thing into the Instagram Reels Downloader. Do not paste a link to a profile, a story, or a search page.
- Make sure the Reel still exists. Deleted, archived, age-restricted, or region-limited Reels will not load, even with a correct link. Open the link in your browser first. If Instagram shows "Sorry, this page isn't available," there is nothing to download.
- Try the right tool for the content type. Reels, Stories, and photos each have their own page. If you are saving a Story, use the Instagram Story Downloader. For a regular feed video or photo, use the video downloader or photo downloader.
- Switch browsers and turn off blockers. Aggressive content blockers, some VPNs, and private-relay settings can interrupt a download. Try Safari or Chrome with extensions paused, then retry. If you are on a work or school network, try mobile data instead.
- Know where the file went on iPhone and Android. Sometimes the download worked but you cannot find it. On iPhone, Safari usually saves to the Files app (Downloads folder) first, and you then tap Share and Save Video to add it to your Camera Roll. On Android, check the Downloads folder in your Files app. Our device guides walk through both: iPhone and Android.
- Wait a minute and retry. Instagram changes how it serves video from time to time, and busy periods can slow any online tool. If a link that should work fails once, wait a minute, copy the link again, and retry before assuming the Reel is unavailable.
- If it is your own Reel, use Instagram's built-in options. For Reels you posted yourself, open your Reel, tap the three-dot menu, and look for the save or download option. You can also turn on saving of your own posts and Reels to your device under Settings and activity → Archiving and downloading, depending on your app version.

Frequently asked questions
Why is there no Download button on some Instagram Reels?
The creator can turn off downloads for their Reels, and Reels from private accounts cannot be downloaded at all. If a public Reel plays in a browser but has no Download option in the app, the creator has most likely disabled it.
Can any tool download a Reel from a private account?
No. Private content is only served to approved followers, so a downloader cannot access it. Be wary of any site that claims it can, especially one that asks for your Instagram password.
Why does my downloaded Reel have no sound?
Instagram's own in-app downloads can drop or mute licensed music. Saving the file from a link usually keeps the audio Instagram serves with the video. If you only need the sound, try the Instagram Audio Downloader.
Is it okay to reuse a Reel I downloaded?
Saving a public Reel for personal viewing is different from reposting it. Reels belong to their creators, so get permission before you repost or monetize one. This is general information, not legal advice.
Try the Instagram Reels Downloader
Paste a public Reel link and save it in HD from your browser. No app and no Instagram login.
